Auto-Layouter

Definition: What is the Auto-Layouter?

The Auto-Layouter in the Aeneis BPM software is a special function for the automated arrangement of shapes in BPMN diagrams. It ensures that all process elements, such as tasks, events, branches or sub-processes, are arranged perfectly, proportionally and in a structured manner on the drawing board.

With a single click, the Auto-Layouter analyses the process logic and creates a uniformly designed, clearly readable diagram. It is based on defined distances, lines and swim lanes and thus ensures maximum readability regardless of the user's modelling experience.

In contrast to manual layout adjustments, the Auto-Layouter significantly reduces the time required and ensures a uniform presentation of process diagrams. This ensures consistency and quality assurance across the entire process model, especially when modeling complex processes or when processing by several people.

Features and benefits

The Auto-Layouter offers BPMN modelers in Aeneis numerous advantages:

  • Automatic layouting: Tidy and clear presentation of processes without manually moving shapes.
  • Perfect proportions: Uniform distances and consistent arrangement ensure a harmonious overall picture.
  • Consistency across models: Uniform layouts strengthen comprehensibility and acceptance within the organization.
  • Saving time: Especially with complex or extensive models, the Auto-Layouter tool significantly reduces the workload.
  • Optimum print and export quality: Automatically created diagrams are immediately presentable, even for audits or workshops.

Technical background

The Auto-Layouter in Aeneis uses model-internal information and semantic logic to automatically structure BPMN diagrams. When the layout function is triggered, the system analyses the overall constellation of all elements — including their relationships, flow directions and their integration into swim lanes — and uses this information to generate a geometrically consistent, standard-compliant diagram.

The following technical aspects characterize how it works:

1. Recognition and positioning of starting points

The Auto-Layouter automatically recognizes start events as process entry points and places them at the top left edge of the drawing area. From there, the layout unfolds from left to right, in accordance with BPMN conventions.

2. Path tracing and sequence flow

The Aut-Layouter follows the sequence flow through the diagram and automatically analyses which elements follow one another, branch out, or converge. Gateways, loops, or parallel paths are recognized and arranged in a way that ensures both process-oriented readability and graphical balance.

3. Optimizing distances and lines

All shapes are arranged proportionally to each other with uniform spacing and optimized lines for the connections. This prevents lines from crossing each other or running across shapes. This increases clarity enormously.

4. Integration of swim lanes

If swim lanes are present in the diagram, the Auto-Layouter automatically takes their structure into account. Process elements are assigned to the respective lanes and evenly distributed within them. The result is a clear organizational separation while at the same time providing a functional presentation of the process.

5. Responsiveness to changes

The Auto-Layouter reacts flexibly to model changes. After inserting new elements or moving existing shapes, the Auto-Layouter reacts immediately to bring the diagram back into a balanced and standard-compliant arrangement.

6. Consideration of layout profiles

The Auto-Layouter is based on configurable layout profiles that can be maintained centrally in Aeneis. Among other things, the following can be defined here:

  • positioning requirements for shapes,
  • font sizes and colors,
  • standard distances between shapes,
  • inputs and outputs of connectors and
  • alignment of the swim lanes.
